What is an innovation school?
The Innovation Schools Act of 2008 was designed to provide a pathway for schools and districts to develop and implement innovative practices in a wide variety of areas for the purpose of improving student outcomes. The Act provides a process that allows schools to petition their local boards for waivers from district-level policies and for school boards to petition to the State Board of Education for waivers from certain state-level laws and regulations.
At Swigert International School we have exercised several waivers from the district, allowing us to develop and create our own IB curriculum, set our school calendar differently from the Denver Public Schools standard calendar, and enact annual contracts for our faculty. This autonomy allows us to meet the specific needs of our school community and the flexibility to utilize a variety of resources and professional development opportunities that exist outside traditional DPS schools.
