The Eagle Post – February 23rd

Posted February 23, 2022

Dear Swigert Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and fresh blanket of snow. With the freezing temperatures today we will be inside for both lunch and recess. Students have the option to watch a movie, read or play games with their peers. We try our best to give students movement breaks throughout the day. We are hoping to go outside tomorrow, so please send your kids with layers.

As we wrap up February, I wanted to share our student and staff Black History Month video. In the video and in classrooms, our students and staff shared about different Black people in their lives that were inspiring and embodied our IB learner profile traits.  We also wanted to share this resource to bring an international lens to Black History Month: 30 Black Heroes From Around The World To Celebrate Every Day. See the International Mindedness Moments section below for more information.

One of the many things we missed during covid was regular fieldwork.  As an IB school we strive to provide authentic learning experiences tied to our units of study by going out into the community and bringing the community into the school.  Our IB Coordinator, Caroline Dane, created this  video to showcase our fieldwork so far this year!

The mask mandate ends on Friday for all Denver Public Schools and for all age groups.  We know families are in different places with this decision and  know that families will make different decisions for their children. Some families still have younger kids who aren’t able to get vaccinated yet or have immunocompromised kids.  We are all a community and will respect and honor different decisions.  Denver Public Schools will send out specific guidelines and any quarantine changes.  Please reach out if you have any questions,Shelby Dennis

Last Chance for Yearbooks

Yearbooks are no longer available through the Walsworth website. However, we did order extra, both hard- and soft-cover. Yearbooks can be purchased through myschoolbucks.com until they are sold out. Once they have sold out, you are welcome to email Daphne to be put on a list. Walsworth does send extra yearbooks, but we never know how many until they arrive. We won’t collect any money on the waitlist books until we’re sure we have them to hand out.

Yearbooks are $36.25 for a softcover or $41.25 for a hardcover.

Auction

The auction preparation is in full swing. A huge thank you to all who have already contributed! This year is going to be fabulous! Every contribution makes a huge impact for the school! Beyond the class baskets, we are still looking for help in some specific areas. Do you have a vacation home that you would be willing to donate the use of, do you have sports tickets that you might not be able to use, or do you want to donate a bottle of wine or champagne to help us boost some of our experiences? Again, lots of gratitude! We are counting down the days until we can all celebrate our amazing school in person!

Pre-Order Ticket Sales and Auction Shirts coming soon!

Reach out if you have any questions or donations! The Auction Committee (mollyelacy@gmail.comamandatjozsa@gmail.comaprilmarieslater@gmail.com)

Summer Connections

Summer Connections (formerly Summer Academy) is a free, 6-week academic program that is open to all rising 1st through 5th-grade students. This full-day program was redesigned to prepare elementary students for future success.

There are a few programming options offered by DPS for students who have Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Please contact the Special Education team if you are unsure which program is best for your student. Participation and attendance in the Extended School Year (ESY) program is a priority for students who are eligible for these services.

Students will engage with content they will see in the upcoming school year, which will include instruction in foundational literacy, math and science. Our enrichment partners will guide students for 60 minutes each day through hands-on activities aligned with that day’s academic lessons.
