The Eagle Post – May 10

Posted May 10, 2022

Dear Swigert Community,

“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”― Martin Luther King Jr.

We are thrilled to bring back our Fifth  Annual Swigert Gives Back Day this Friday.  As IB Learners we focus on being caring which also includes giving back to the community we live in. This is truly one of my favorite days of the year, the students learn about non profits in the community and engage in meaningful projects.  This year we are partnering with Project Angel Heart, There with Care,  Prader Willis Foundation, Morgan Adams Foundation,  and Safe Spaces Collaborative.  Two of our fifth grade classes will focus on our community garden and setting up our outdoor learning classroom. We will kick off the day  with a whole school assembly then spread out to do our work. We will have a festive lunch  with the cafeteria providing an outdoor bbq and we will put on some dancing music.

Swigert is   also  excited to be celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month! Click here for a video featuring Swigert students, families and staff, highlighting AAPI individuals that we admire and the IB attributes they embody.

I look forward to seeing you at our auction on Saturday in the beautiful Botanic Gardens. The weather looks perfect for an outdoor gathering.  If you haven’t purchased your tickets yet, please do as soon as possible so we can plan accordingly- Swigert Auction 2022 | Powered By GiveSmart

Huge shout out to parents Molly Lacy and Amanda Jozsa for coordinating this special event, it is not a small feat.Shelby Dennis

International Mindedness Moments

–This regular segment features an activity you can do with your child to reinforce International Mindedness learning at home and to take action!–

IB states: “An internationally minded person is open-minded about the common humanity of all people and accepts and respects other cultures and beliefs. The internationally minded person takes action through discussion and collaboration to help build a better and peaceful world.”

Welcome to Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month at Swigert! Here’s a fun video featuring Swigert students, families and staff celebrating AAPI individuals they admire and the IB attributes these individuals embody: Check out the video here!

Help us bring Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month conversations home. You can ask your child:

-Who is an Asian American or Pacific Islander person that you admire?

-Why do you admire this person?

-Which IB Learner Profile Attribute does this person demonstrate? (Are they an inquirer, thinker, communicator or risk-taker? Are they caring, reflective, open minded, principled, balanced or knowledgeable?) Why?

Also, many thanks to everyone who made International Night such a delightful event! Check out this video for a peek into the evening!

Medication Pick-Up

Dear Swigert Families,

Thank you for supporting The Denver Public Schools medication policy. Please make sure to pick up all medications used by your child on or before the last day of school. Colorado Guidelines state that medications are not permitted to be sent home with your child. If your child is participating in a summer program, their medication will not automatically be transferred to the site of the program. It is up to the parent/guardian to pick up the medication from the school and transport it to the summer program site.

*REMAINING MEDICATIONS WILL BE DESTROYED END OF DAY JUNE 3rd 2022.*

It has been a pleasure to work with you and your child this school year and I look forward to next year. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at hoang_tran@dpsk12.org.

Sincerely,

Hoang Tran

Discovery Link Summer Program

Discovery Link will be offering as much outdoor programming as possible this summer. Please see the attached brochure, or click here for more information or to register.

Summer Connections

Summer Connections (formerly Summer Academy) is a free, 6-week academic program that is open to all rising 1st through 5th-grade students. This full-day program was redesigned to prepare elementary students for future success.

There are a few programming options offered by DPS for students who have Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Please contact the Special Education team if you are unsure which program is best for your student. Participation and attendance in the Extended School Year (ESY) program is a priority for students who are eligible for these services.

Students will engage with content they will see in the upcoming school year, which will include instruction in foundational literacy, math and science. Our enrichment partners will guide students for 60 minutes each day through hands-on activities aligned with that day’s academic lessons.

Please click here for more information and registration instructions.
