The Eagle Post – August 16th

Posted August 16, 2022

Dear Swigert Families,

We are so excited to welcome you all over the  upcoming days at various  welcome events. We are thrilled to have families  come into the building this Thursday from 5:00 – 6:00 for Meet the Teacher Night! It will be a great  opportunity to connect as a community, see classroom placements, meet the teachers and peek into classrooms. Class lists will be posted  so that you can see who your child’s teacher is, and then we encourage you to walk to the classroom to have a quick look and say hello to the teacher. There will be maps posted to help you find the room and plenty of Swigert staff around to guide you to the right spot.  While quickly visiting the classroom, please do not allow children to play with materials or anything in the room.  There will be lots of time for that on Monday!

After you’ve visited classrooms, we invite you to head to the playground to enjoy popsicles, a photo area, music, and time to mingle with other families. There will also be a shaved ice truck available for purchase. Make sure you stop by the tables to sign up for PTA, help in your child’s classroom as a room parent, and to order spirit wear.

Please understand that teachers have just been able to get back into their classrooms, so most of the rooms do not look “finished” or like they will once we are ready to start school. Also, we ask that you use the time for a quick introduction with the teacher, but save all personal questions and conversations about your child for a private meeting with the teacher. This will ensure that everyone has a chance to say hello in the short time we will have together.

If you need to contact the teacher around specific concerns or questions for your child, we encourage you to reach out via email.  All teachers’ email addresses can be found on the website, at this link: https://swigert.dpsk12.org/faculty-staff/staff-directory/

If you are unable to come Thursday evening, no problem. All classroom teachers will send an email out with a welcome letter and electronic sign up for assessment (on the afternoons of the first two days of school )Thursday afternoon.

Registration

Every family must register every student each year. Those of you complete online registration (during either the Early Bird window or the current year window) are done – unless we’re missing something specific to your child(ren), or you have child in our ECE program.

If you didn’t complete registration online, we’ll have paper copies for you at Meet the Teacher Night. You can either complete it there, or take the paperwork home and return it on the first day of school.

Teachers will also have Transportation Forms, to indicate how your child will get home from school, both for the first two (half) days and ongoing. If you’d like to fill it out ahead of time to bring with you, it’s also available here.

Bus Routes

If your child(ren) will be riding the bus, you can find their bus number in Parent Portal, under the Transportation tab. You can also see the bus routes here:

476
478
479

Please note: This year, Transportation will not allow anyone on the bus if they are not on the roster. This does not mean that if you didn’t opt in over the summer, your child(ren) can’t ride the bus. They will be on the manifest even if you haven’t opted them in yet.

School Supplies

Anyone who ordered school supplies through EPI during the first window will have their supplies in the classroom by the first day of school. If you ordered through EPI and had them shipped to your house, or if you bought supplies directly, please bring them either to Meet the Teacher Night, or on the first day of school. If you still need to buy supplies, the lists are below. Please note, if the lists are broken up by alphabet, it refers to the last name.

First Week Information

The first two days – August 22nd and 23rd  – of school are half days. This allows students to ease into their new schedule and provide time for individual assessments in the afternoon. Your classroom teacher will reach out to you to set up individual time slots for these afternoon assessments.  The arrival time is the same, with students arriving between 8:00 am and 8:15, with classes starting at 8:15. The dismissal time is noon, no lunch will be provided.  Be sure to pack a water bottle and snack.

We will have our annual park to school walk on the first day. We will gather at 7:45am at the dog statue park at 35th and Xanthia Court. We will begin our walk to school at 7:50am. Parents and siblings are welcome to join us for this walk. Staff will be out on the playground beginning at 8:00 am to welcome students and guide them to their arrival door. If you are unable to join the walk, no problem. Staff will be out on the playground ready to greet your children. Buses will be running their regular routes for both arrival and dismissal. Wednesday through Friday will be regular days 8:15-3:15.

Swigert Community Welcome Breakfast – Saturday August 27th 8:30-10:30 am.  We would love for you to join us at our annual welcome back community breakfast. This annual event , sponsored by our PTA,  is  a wonderful way to meet new families and reconnect with students and staff. Drop-Off Map

Start of Day

We are shifting our start of day procedures a bit to adjust back to our pre covid landscape. We are also taking in some of our learning from the benefits of  a softer  start to inform our beginning of day procedures, please see below:

  • Students will be able to come to the playground or cafeteria (through cafeteria doors) between 8:00-8:10 where supervision will be present.  Students only come to the cafeteria if they want breakfast.
  • Non classroom teachers  and specialists assigned morning duty are actively monitoring for safety as well as welcoming students and families
  • 8:10 Students in grades K-1 will line up in the classroom spot where teachers will meet them and students in grades 2-5 will enter through designated doors and make their way to their classrooms.   Kindergarten line up will be in designated spots on the kindergarten playground (see map below) and first grade will be on the basketball court. With the first grade classrooms being so close to the parking lot this will be the safest spot as well as it is the same spot for lunch line up.
  • After 8:15 all students will need to go through the main office to check in.

ECE Information

Hi, ECEers and families, and welcome (back) to Swigert! We look forward to meeting our newest Eagles. If you’ve already completed the online registration for your kiddos, thank you! If not, please remember that all students need to be registered every year. You can register them online through the Parent Portal, or pick up paper registration forms at Meet the Teacher Night, Thursday, August 18th, from 5 – 8 pm.

In addition to the DPS registration, ECE requires some extra paperwork to be filled out. Please see the attached ECE paperwork packet, in English or Spanish, which needs to be returned before school starts. There is a page that needs to be filled out by your child’s PCP. If you’ve had a visit in the past year, this can be dropped off at the doctor’s office and they’ll complete it for you. This is a busy time of year for them, so the sooner you can drop that off, the sooner you’ll get it back.
