The Eagle Post – November 15th

Posted November 15, 2022

Dear Swigert Families,

This past week we have a few wonderful and poignant reminders of school feeling more normal this year.  Our fourth and fifth graders performed at their first grade level concert in three years, the last time the fifth graders performed they were in second grade! It was so beautiful to hear their united voices.  We also hosted an in person third through fifth grade spelling bee. I was proud of the way this inclusive event went and it was wonderful to see different kids shine as well as support each other in the process. It’s not easy getting up in front of a big crowd – risk takers and communicators.

We are in the process of completing our innovation review draft to turn into DPS on Friday.  Please read this letter if you are interested in knowing more and learning about our revised plan.

As we move into Thanksgiving Break, I just wanted to express my  sincere gratitude for our students, staff and community.  I am humbled everyday by working in such a caring, dynamic, generous and thriving community. Have a wonderful break with your families.

Sincerely,

Shelby Dennis

Holiday Meal Drive

Swigert Community, we need your help!

During the Holiday season, both Thanksgiving and Winter Break, we have been able to provide funds for our families that need assistance.  In the past we have relied on outside organizations to handle Thanksgiving, and then we have collected gift cards for the longer break.  This year things have changed.  The organization that we normally work with to provide Thanksgiving support is no longer moving forward with this program.

For this reason we are starting a gift card drive for the ENTIRE holiday season.  Right now our focus is on raising $1,000 to make sure our students have a nice family meal over the Holiday.  Any money above that amount will be used to provide meals and gifts for impacted families during the holiday season.

If you would like to donate for Thanksgiving and the holiday season, please venmo funds to: @Swigert-Richard_Fisher

Or you can purchase gift cards from Target in $20 increments.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Kiss ‘N Go Lane

Swigert has Kiss ‘n Go lanes on both the east and west side of the school.  These areas, indicated with a yellow curb, are designed for parents who want to quickly pull into the parking lot, let their kids out, and then continue on to work.  Now that it is winter, and piles of snow will restrict the flow of traffic further, it is important that you respect the rules.  If you would like to have a longer stop, please go ahead and pull into a parking space, or pull alongside a curb so that other parents can continue on with their day.

Thanks for your understanding.

Cold Weather

Please make sure that students bring cold weather clothing to school as winter temperatures are settling in.  We try to get kids outside for recess whenever possible, so things like heavy coats, hats, and gloves are essential to make sure they are comfortable during outdoor times.  Unless it is actively snowing or raining heavily, or the temperature drops below twenty degrees, students will likely be going outside for recess activities.  Please know that we use twenty degrees as a guide rather than a hard and fast rule. Things such as wind and sun play a part in our decision making as well.  For example, it may be right at or slightly below twenty degrees, but if the sun is shining, the wind is calm and there is some heat radiating off of the blacktop, we may decide to bundle up and get out for a bit of fresh air.  We know that when kids are cooped up inside all day without getting out it becomes very hard to stay productive in the classroom, so we make every effort to get some fresh air unless conditions become dangerous or extremely uncomfortable to do so.

Thanksgiving Dinner

We have sold out of tickets for guests for the Thanksgiving Dinner. All students will still be able to enjoy the lunch. If you would like to attend but didn’t get one of the tickets, you’re still welcome! Just bring your own food, and you can still sit with your child(ren)!

The lunch schedule is (eating times only listed):

ECE: 11:35 – 11:55
Kdg:  10:50 – 11:25
1st:   10:30 – 11:05
2nd:  11:05 – 11:40
3rd:   12:50 – 1:20
4th:   12:20 – 12:50
5th:   1:20 – 1:45

Please note: if you have more than one student and would like everyone to eat together, that’s no problem! Just come before the earliest lunch starts, so you have time to get checked in and call your other student(s) down to join you. The other student(s) will still have to sit with their classmates during their own lunchtime, unless you stay with them. However, they won’t have to eat again.

Middle School Tours

Tour season is ramping up for DPS School Choice. We’d love to support our 5th grade families in any way we can as you start to tour middle schools. We have made a webpage with the 6 Central Park enrollment schools with links to their tour sign ups. Let us know if you have any questions that we can help find the answers for!
