The Eagle Post – November 29th

Posted November 29, 2022

Dear Swigert Families,

I hope everyone was able to recharge, connect and stay healthy over Thanksgiving Break. I am grateful our attendance is back and hope we are on the upward trend with healthy kids, staff and families.  We had a great deal of excitement and fun today around the World Cup Game. We were able to watch the game during indoor recess and in the cafeteria. Here are a few fun photos of our excited sports fans:

We started the week off with two community speakers that provided great perspectives for our students. Congressman Jason Crow came to speak to our fourth graders who are currently studying government.  He spoke about his background, current responsibilities and why he chose to work in public service.

Our ECE students had a visit from police officers to kick off their community unit. The police officers were in for some poignant four year old questions including, “Can you help me find my lost scooter?”  and  “Will you be able to come to my house when my cat gets lost?”  Tomorrow they will have a visit from the local fire department.  Community guest speakers are an important part of our IB units and a wonderful way for students to connect their learning with the world around them.

We look forward to seeing families next Thursday, December 8th for our Annual Winterfest Celebration. We will share winter holiday stories from around the world, make crafts,  and view 3-5th grade art work.  We invite families to bring a traditional holiday dish from their background or family.  Winterfest

Sincerely,

Shelby Dennis

Thank you for supporting your child’s creativity in the arts!

Kiss ‘N Go Lane

Swigert has Kiss ‘n Go lanes on both the east and west side of the school.  These areas, indicated with a yellow curb, are designed for parents who want to quickly pull into the parking lot, let their kids out, and then continue on to work.  Now that it is winter, and piles of snow will restrict the flow of traffic further, it is important that you respect the rules.  If you would like to have a longer stop, please go ahead and pull into a parking space, or pull alongside a curb so that other parents can continue on with their day.

Thanks for your understanding.

Cold Weather

Please make sure that students bring cold weather clothing to school as winter temperatures are settling in.  We try to get kids outside for recess whenever possible, so things like heavy coats, hats, and gloves are essential to make sure they are comfortable during outdoor times.  Unless it is actively snowing or raining heavily, or the temperature drops below twenty degrees, students will likely be going outside for recess activities.  Please know that we use twenty degrees as a guide rather than a hard and fast rule. Things such as wind and sun play a part in our decision making as well.  For example, it may be right at or slightly below twenty degrees, but if the sun is shining, the wind is calm and there is some heat radiating off of the blacktop, we may decide to bundle up and get out for a bit of fresh air.  We know that when kids are cooped up inside all day without getting out it becomes very hard to stay productive in the classroom, so we make every effort to get some fresh air unless conditions become dangerous or extremely uncomfortable to do so.

Middle School Tours

Tour season is ramping up for DPS School Choice. We’d love to support our 5th grade families in any way we can as you start to tour middle schools.
