Dear Swigert Families,
We look forward to seeing families this Thursday, December 8th for our annual Winterfest Celebration at Swigert from 6:00-7:30. This is a school wide community event to celebrate and learn about different cultural traditions from around the world. It ties with our IB focus on encouraging international mindedness. International mindedness is a view of the world in which people see themselves connected to the global community and assume a sense of responsibility towards its members.
We will share winter holiday stories from around the world, drink some hot cocoa, make crafts and sample different international foods. We invite families to bring a traditional holiday dish from their cultural background or family. We are also highlighting third through fifth grade visual art work. The halls are adorned with beautiful student pieces, thank you Ms. Delap for working so diligently with our students to make this happen. And huge appreciation to Tabitha Jones for doing so much work behind the scenes and keeping this school tradition alive.

Mrs. S put together a collection of books about winter traditions from around the world if you want to access and read with your kids.

IB in Action:
Northfield High School Students from the Students Demand Action Club visited our fourth grade classrooms today. The high school students talked to the fourth graders about how to take action about issues they are passionate about and different ways they have advocated for voting rights and legislation at the state level. They also created a mock election and students voted for their favorite type of candy; skittles were the overwhelming winner.
Sincerely,
Shelby Dennis

The 5th grade classes need empty 2-liter bottles for an experiment next week. If you have any to donate, please send them to school with your students by Tuesday, December 13th. The 5th graders will come to the classrooms to collect them.
Thank you for your help!

Swigert has Kiss ‘n Go lanes on both the east and west side of the school. These areas, indicated with a yellow curb, are designed for parents who want to quickly pull into the parking lot, let their kids out, and then continue on to work. Now that it is winter, and piles of snow will restrict the flow of traffic further, it is important that you respect the rules. If you would like to have a longer stop, please go ahead and pull into a parking space, or pull alongside a curb so that other parents can continue on with their day.
Thanks for your understanding.
Please make sure that students bring cold weather clothing to school as winter temperatures are settling in. We try to get kids outside for recess whenever possible, so things like heavy coats, hats, and gloves are essential to make sure they are comfortable during outdoor times. Unless it is actively snowing or raining heavily, or the temperature drops below twenty degrees, students will likely be going outside for recess activities. Please know that we use twenty degrees as a guide rather than a hard and fast rule. Things such as wind and sun play a part in our decision making as well. For example, it may be right at or slightly below twenty degrees, but if the sun is shining, the wind is calm and there is some heat radiating off of the blacktop, we may decide to bundle up and get out for a bit of fresh air. We know that when kids are cooped up inside all day without getting out it becomes very hard to stay productive in the classroom, so we make every effort to get some fresh air unless conditions become dangerous or extremely uncomfortable to do so.
A celebration of different winter holidays and an opportunity to learn about a variety of cultural traditions.
