The Eagle Post – December 13th

Posted December 13, 2022

Dear Swigert Families,

It was wonderful to see so many families at our Winterfest celebration last week.  We had over 300 participants and went through 20 crock pots of hot cocoa.  I loved seeing and sampling desserts from around the world, thank you!  The walls are still adorned with student artwork if you have an opportunity to stop by.   Here is a folder with photos if you want to see more: Winterfest Photos

We have our first edition of our 3-5th grade  student newspaper, the Eaglet Post. Thank you Karyn Cole and her mighty volunteer crew for making this happen.

This week will be a festive week capped off with classroom parties.  On Friday our staff is participating in a holiday sweater contest. Students are welcome to participate with festive  holiday outfits, but it is completely optional.  Thank you for your generous donations that go to support our families in need, it is greatly appreciated.  I am so very grateful for our Swigert Community.  Have a wonderful, healthy and family filled holiday break. I look forward to seeing everyone in the new year!

If families need support during the holiday season, Denver Public Schools have community hubs that offer a variety of services: Community Hubs | Denver Public Schools (dpsk12.org).

Sincerely,

Shelby Dennis

Vision Screening

Denver Public Schools provides free vision, hearing, and dental screenings for all students in
identified grades (Early Childhood Education, Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th).
The screenings are NOT an assessment or an evaluation and do NOT replace professional
exams. Mass screening is considered best practice to identify students who may be at risk for
health concerns affecting the student’s ability to learn, and who may need extra support to reach
academic benchmarks.
Your student will receive screenings in the following areas:
Vision, Hearing, and Dental. Resources are available for DPS enrolled students.
You must notify your school nurse directly should you wish to
REFUSE/OPT OUT of any of the free screenings for your student.

The health screening components of vision and hearing will be completed at your child’s school
on:
Dates: 01/04/2023 – 01/06/2023
Please contact your school nurse for any questions or concerns about the health screenings.
Parents/guardians of students who were absent or who did not have optimal hearing, vision or
dental screening results will be notified in writing regarding the results.
Thank you for your assistance as we work together to educate and support your student!

Sincerely,

Kiss ‘N Go Lane

Swigert has Kiss ‘n Go lanes on both the east and west side of the school.  These areas, indicated with a yellow curb, are designed for parents who want to quickly pull into the parking lot, let their kids out, and then continue on to work.  Now that it is winter, and piles of snow will restrict the flow of traffic further, it is important that you respect the rules.  If you would like to have a longer stop, please go ahead and pull into a parking space, or pull alongside a curb so that other parents can continue on with their day.

Thanks for your understanding.

Cold Weather

Please make sure that students bring cold weather clothing to school as winter temperatures are settling in.  We try to get kids outside for recess whenever possible, so things like heavy coats, hats, and gloves are essential to make sure they are comfortable during outdoor times.  Unless it is actively snowing or raining heavily, or the temperature drops below twenty degrees, students will likely be going outside for recess activities.  Please know that we use twenty degrees as a guide rather than a hard and fast rule. Things such as wind and sun play a part in our decision making as well.  For example, it may be right at or slightly below twenty degrees, but if the sun is shining, the wind is calm and there is some heat radiating off of the blacktop, we may decide to bundle up and get out for a bit of fresh air.  We know that when kids are cooped up inside all day without getting out it becomes very hard to stay productive in the classroom, so we make every effort to get some fresh air unless conditions become dangerous or extremely uncomfortable to do so.

Middle School Tours

Tour season is ramping up for DPS School Choice. We’d love to support our 5th grade families in any way we can as you start to tour middle schools. We have made a webpage with the 6 Central Park enrollment schools with links to their tour sign ups. Let us know if you have any questions that we can help find the answers for!
