Happy New Year Swigert Families
Happy New Year ! I hope you all enjoyed your break and precious time with your family. I was able to visit with my parents, siblings and respective families in California. We all congregated in the house that we grew up in- just a few short years ago. Today Swigert Staff celebrated the new year together as a professional learning community. We learned about and planned opportunities for discourse and authentic learning in math and writing. We spent time in teams planning our upcoming IB units. This year we are focusing on taking time to learn student stories, supporting student agency and implementing ways to excite curiosity. We look forward to seeing our students tomorrow, bright and early. Stay warm and safe in these chilly temperatures..
Sincerely,
Shelby Dennis

Some of our students now have smart watches. We ask that they are only used as watches during the school day. Students should not be calling home or using apps. If they need to call home during the day they need to ask permission.

Hello Swigert community! We are the Swigert Climate Activism Team and we would like to launch 2023 with a monthly challenge. This month we are challenging you and your family to make our community cleaner by picking up one piece of trash every day. If you forget one day you can always pick up multiple pieces the next. If you participate in the challenge your student can fill out this form at the end of the month. The completed forms will be entered into a raffle to earn a prize!
Denver Public Schools provides free vision, hearing, and dental screenings for all students in
identified grades (Early Childhood Education, Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th).
The screenings are NOT an assessment or an evaluation and do NOT replace professional
exams. Mass screening is considered best practice to identify students who may be at risk for
health concerns affecting the student’s ability to learn, and who may need extra support to reach
academic benchmarks.
Your student will receive screenings in the following areas:
Vision, Hearing, and Dental. Resources are available for DPS enrolled students.
You must notify your school nurse directly should you wish to
REFUSE/OPT OUT of any of the free screenings for your student.
The health screening components of vision and hearing will be completed at your child’s school
on:
Dates: 01/04/2023 – 01/06/2023
Please contact your school nurse for any questions or concerns about the health screenings.
Parents/guardians of students who were absent or who did not have optimal hearing, vision or
dental screening results will be notified in writing regarding the results.
Thank you for your assistance as we work together to educate and support your student!
Sincerely,
School Nurse: Hoang Tran

Please make sure that students bring cold weather clothing to school as winter temperatures are settling in. We try to get kids outside for recess whenever possible, so things like heavy coats, hats, and gloves are essential to make sure they are comfortable during outdoor times. Unless it is actively snowing or raining heavily, or the temperature drops below twenty degrees, students will likely be going outside for recess activities. Please know that we use twenty degrees as a guide rather than a hard and fast rule. Things such as wind and sun play a part in our decision making as well. For example, it may be right at or slightly below twenty degrees, but if the sun is shining, the wind is calm and there is some heat radiating off of the blacktop, we may decide to bundle up and get out for a bit of fresh air. We know that when kids are cooped up inside all day without getting out it becomes very hard to stay productive in the classroom, so we make every effort to get some fresh air unless conditions become dangerous or extremely uncomfortable to do so.
Tour season is ramping up for DPS School Choice. We’d love to support our 5th grade families in any way we can as you start to tour middle schools. We have made a webpage with the 6 Central Park enrollment schools with links to their tour sign ups. Let us know if you have any questions that we can help find the answers for!
