The Eagle Post – May 30th

Posted May 30, 2023

Dear Swigert Families,

It’s going to be a quick week as we wrap up this amazing year. The students are involved in end of year celebrations and reflections. I am looking forward to celebrating our fifth graders this year as they share their IB exhibition projects and we commemorate their time at Swigert.   On Friday morning at 11:50 we will do our annual fifth grade clap out – parents are welcome to join.  All students line the hallways and cheer the fifth graders out of the building onto the playground.  It’s an emotional and fun  way to send them off to their next journey. Friday is a half day for all students with full dismissal at noon.

We’ve been through a great deal together this year and worked through some significant issues including revising our innovation plan, healthy starts, our shared campus, and  growing our ECE programing next year- to name a few. The DPS Board will vote on our innovation plan and our NDIZ zone on Thursday, June 12th.  I am so proud of our school community for naming what is important to our school community and holding tight to our priorities. Our teachers continue to create engaging and authentic learning experiences that incorporate students taking action and agency in their learning.  We maintain an intentional focus on international mindedness and social emotional learning; and ensuring all students are known and seen. We will continue to grow together as a school community.

Shout out to our parent community who has leaned in to support our school in countless ways and hours! It means a great deal-  thank you to Francine Muggee and Steve Cummings for leading our PTA and SAC committees all year. Your efforts make a big difference for our school.

I am so very  thankful for your partnership and am truly honored to learn from your kids everyday.  We have so much to learn from their approach to the world- their genuine LOVE for learning new things, innovative ideas to solve problems that arise and  most importantly their caring approach to each other.  I  hope you all enjoy your summer adventures and time with your family. Stay safe, healthy and keep on learning.  As B.B. King shared: “The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.”

Sincerely,

Shelby Dennis

I am including links to DPS summer programing and our own Swigert reading summer challenge below.  The kids LOVED the summer reading challenge last year, all incoming and current students are welcome to join.

Summer Garden Help Needed

The Summer Garden has been planted and needs your help!

We’ve planted peppers, tomatoes, tomatillos, jalapenos, pumpkins, flowers, and more!  In the Fall, the students will use the garden as a space to learn about plants, insects, farming, and to harvest food for our backpack program.   If you’re able to help, please sign up to be responsible for an area of the garden (see map on tab 1), or help us control the weeds for a week (tab 2)!  The kids appreciate it!  Any questions? Please contact Allison Owen at 972-839-3480.

Yearbooks

Yearbooks will be delivered in August. 5th graders will receive theirs at their home; everyone else’s will ship to the school, as usual. We’ll arrange a day/days for families who ordered one to come and pick them up, so kids can get together and sign them. If your family is unable to make it at the scheduled time(s), yearbooks will be abailable to pick up during regular office hours.

Get Ready for 5th Grade Tutoring Opportunity!

We have heard your requests!  This summer, join us for a “Get ready for 5th grade” summer program. In a small group setting, students will work with current Swigert 5th grade teachers to review 4th grade concepts and get a sneak peek at some 5th grade fun. We will be offering a literacy group and a math group, with the option to participate in one or both. The program will run for five weeks total, four weeks during the month of June and one week in August.  This way, students get to enjoy their summer with the month of July off and they can get some quick refreshers in August before school starts.  If you are interested in more details, please check out this link!
