This will be my second year at Swigert International School and my 9th year as a teacher in Denver Public Schools. Swigert has proven to be an incredibly welcoming community of students, staff, and families. I absolutely love our International Baccalaureate focus and believe that inquiry based learning is one of the most natural and rigorous forms of education that children can experience. I had a wonderful year of teaching 2nd grade in room 109 and was astounded by the growth, curiosity, and love of learning that my students exhibited as well as the generosity of their parents.
For the seven years prior to joining the Swigert team I taught third grade in both English and Spanish at Johnson Elementary in southwest Denver. I have my master’s degree from DU in curriculum and instruction. I received a BA in Psychology from the University of California in Santa Cruz. When not teaching, my other job is being a mom to a 6 year old boy, a 3 year old step daughter, two Boston Terriers and a fellow teacher (husband). I enjoy playing in the great outdoors. My favorite activities are snowboarding, rock climbing, gardening, and camping. I also really enjoy dancing, traveling, cooking, and playing the drums. I lived, studied, and taught for one year in South Australia in a primary school program. Additionally, I started a community garden, youth farmer’s market, garden club, and salad bar at my last school.
I am incredibly excited to begin my new role as a teacher’s coach and ELA instructor. I am looking forward to working closely with teachers on the second and third grade teams to develop strong lesson plans, instructional strategies, materials and supports, and differentiation techniques. As an English Language Acquisition teacher I will be able to foster my passions for both children and language development. 2015/2016 is going to be an amazing school year!
