How To Choose an Instrument?

Instrument Info

How should you choose an instrument?  There are many things to consider including size, sound and comfort.  Here is some more information about each instrument.  If you would like to try one out before you decide, please contact me and we’ll make arrangements!

Violin

The violin is typically the most popular orchestral instrument and it is also the smallest and highest pitched instrument of the orchestra.  Violins typically carry the melody in an ensemble and can play a variety of styles.  Here is an excerpt of Hilary Hahn playing the the Bach Violin Concerto in A minor.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3-5144TaYg

Viola

The viola is shaped like a violin and is held the same way but it is slightly larger and therefore lower in pitch.  If you like how a violin feels on your shoulder, but don’t prefer the really high pitched notes, then viola is for you!  Viola is a unique instrument with its own special clef and highly versatile due to its similarities to both violins and cellos.  Here is an excerpt of Jeremy Green playing an arrangement of Happy by Pharrell Williams. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiGXdpWxN3k

Cello

The cello is the largest and deepest sounding instrument.  Many people enjoy the sound because it most closely resembles the human voice.  Don’t let its size intimidate you, just as with violin and viola there are sizes made for children.  Cello is beautiful, versatile and fun to play.  Here is an excerpt from the Galvin Cello Quartet playing Polonaise de Concert by Popper. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvIM-sDRUv0&list=RDvvIM-sDRUv0&start_radio=1

Instrument Rental

Instruments can be rented by local vendors and I recommend going this route so that you have an option for instrument repairs and sizing.  Many local stores do rent to own plans that allow your child to change instrument sizes as they grow without having to purchase a new instrument.  I recommend these local instrument shops:

Luther Strings – https://lutherstrings.com/

Denver Violins – https://www.denverviolins.com/

If you choose to purchase an instrument and want an online option, I caution against large online retailers as their instruments are typically unplayable and need several repairs just to work.  An online option that I trust is https://www.sharmusic.com/.

Please note that string instruments have different sizes based upon your child’s size.  It is crucially important for their success to have the right size. The wrong size will lead to frustration and pain so please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions on sizing. Local music stores can help with this too.
